College Possible Milwaukee has received $296,400 in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service and Serve Wisconsin to support 24 AmeriCorps members who will allow College Possible to expand its efforts to coach low-income students to and through college.
College Possible sites across the country have been awarded 160 AmeriCorps Members and $1.5 million in funding. AmeriCorps members supported by these grants in Wisconsin will serve in at least two new College Possible schools across the state and colleges across the country.
“AmeriCorps is an indispensable resource to help meet critical challenges facing our communities,” said Edie Turnbull, executive director of College Possible Milwaukee. “We’re pleased that the Corporation for National and Community Service and our State Commission have recognized the value that AmeriCorps members serving with College Possible offer to communities. These AmeriCorps members will meet pressing local needs as they develop civic and leadership skills that can last a lifetime.”

The current year’s AmeriCorps grant cycle was highly competitive, due to the strong and growing demand by organizations seeking AmeriCorps resources. The 2014 competition prioritized investments in economic opportunity, education, veterans and military families, disaster services, and continued a new initiative for governors and mayors.
AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 members in intensive service annually to serve through nonprofit, faith-based, and community organizations at 25,000 locations across the country. These members help communities tackle pressing problems while mobilizing millions of volunteers for the organizations they serve.
2014 marks the 20th anniversary of the AmeriCorps program. Since 1994, more than 830,000 Americans have provided more than 1 billion hours of service addressing critical challenges from poverty and hunger to disasters and the dropout crisis.
AmeriCorps Members working in the schools listed below will support College Possible’s work to help capable, low-income students become college graduates. College Possible earns the best results in the county by bringing together hard-working students and idealistic AmeriCorps coaches.
College Possible Milwaukee currently serves ten partner high schools: Alexander Hamilton High School, Hmong American Peace Academy, Milwaukee High School of the Arts, Milwaukee School of Languages, Pulaski High School, Riverside University High School, Samuel Morse-John Marshall School for the Gifted and Talented, Saint Joan Antida High School, Saint Thomas More High School, and South Division High School.
