The African American Roundtable is a project of Wisconsin Voices and we envision a Wisconsin where everyone has the means, drive, and freedom to fully participate in a just democracy that provides opportunities for all people to thrive. As a project of Wisconsin Voices, the African American Roundtable exists to improve the quality of life for Wisconsin’s African-American community through civic engagement, education, economic development, access to quality and affordable healthcare and community justice by building long-term political capital through issue based organizing.
The African American Roundtable is currently seeking a Lead Organizer to work with the Director in implementing culturally specific strategies for current and future campaigns to improve the quality of life for African Americans. Specifically, the work in 2018 will be centered around voter engagement, advancing police reform and violence prevention work. The Lead Organizer is responsible for mobilizing grassroots support for issue based organizing to meet AART’s campaign goals. They will also oversee a team of activists to help build and develop a base of leaders and allies to canvass neighborhoods in Milwaukee. The Lead Organizer is supervised by the AART Director. This position will also work closely with community residents, key community leaders and other stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Ensure AART’s base building goals are met
- Data collection
- Recruit participants and speakers for events
- Create, plan and help lead events to ensure participation from our base
- Assist in development and lead execution of plans for engagement of strong supporters
- Create leadership and volunteer opportunities to plug people into campaign based work
- Coordinate with the AART Director to ensure our organizing supports our advocacy objectives with coalition members
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Support the mission and goals of Wisconsin Voices and AART
- At least 1 year experience in field work including grassroots community organizing
- Excellent communication skills with an ability to communicate with sensitivity and empathy
- Must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week during weekdays and during peak times be available to work some evenings and weekends
- Lived experience and/or direct work with Black communities
- Familiarity with Black racial, economic, gender, and other relevant social justice issues
- Proficient in Word and Excel, and Google Suites
- Physical requirements include, being able to walk long distances
- Strong networking skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks
- Reliable transportation
Salary and Benefits: Base salary for this position is $38,000 – $42,000 per year, and experience and aptitude will be taken into consideration for negotiating salary. This is a full-time salaried position funded through the end of 2018 with potential to be continued through 2019. Wisconsin Voices employees receive benefits in their first year that include: 3 weeks paid vacation time, 11 paid holidays, 80 paid sick hours, a 401K retirement plan, partial cell phone reimbursement, mileage and expense reimbursement for required travel, and health, vision, and dental insurance.
