Randy Roguski, metro editor of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, along with investigative reporter Brittany Wallman, will deliver “What Went Wrong in Parkland?” at the 2019 Burleigh Media Ethics Lecture from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 10, in the Alumni Memorial Union Ballrooms, 1142 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Roguski and Wallman will outline what has and has not changed in the aftermath of the Feb. 14, 2018 shooting that resulted in the deaths of 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida — the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history.
The two will discuss the Sun-Sentinel’s Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting that examined the prevention and response failures by Broward County law enforcement, the school district and social services in a high school touted as the state’s safest.
They will also provide a look into the lessons the tragic event holds for schools in America, the debate over gun control and ethical dilemmas the reporters faced.
The lecture is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism and the Diederich College of Communication. Online registration is requested.
