It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Watch “Metcalfe Park: Black Vote Rising”: Ongoing

371 Productions recently produced  “Metcalfe Park: Black Vote Rising.” The short film follows Danell Cross and Melody McCurtis of Metcalfe Park Community Bridges as they work to encourage Metcalfe Park residents to use their voices and vote. The short film can be viewed on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Wisconsin Watch.

2. Virtual story time and programming at the Milwaukee Public Library: Friday, Oct. 23

The Milwaukee Public Library is hosting virtual story time and programming for children in Spanish and English. The Spanish program will be held on Zoom from 9:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. The English program will be held on Zoom and begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 23. The programs feature stories and songs and are designed to help children develop early literacy skills.  

3. Pedal and paddle with Red Bike & Green Milwaukee: Saturday, Oct. 24

Red Bike & Green Milwaukee, along with its partners, is hosting a biking and kayaking event. The group will meet at the Lincoln Park Pavilion, 1301 W. Hampton Ave., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. The plan is to ride a few miles on the Oak Leaf Trail toward the Milwaukee River and then jump in some kayaks. There is a limited number of kayaks available.

4. Vliet Street pumpkin patch: Saturday, Oct. 24

Ald. Russell Stamper II is inviting residents to check out the Vliet Street pumpkin patch and pick up a free pumpkin. The patch will be at the Vliet Street Oasis, 3743 W. Vliet St., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24. There will be refreshments, including warm beverages and Pete’s Pops.    

5. Community pop-up and grocery giveaway: Sunday, Oct. 25

The Parklawn Assembly of God and Dream Team United MKE are hosting a community pop-up and grocery giveaway. The event will take place at Parklawn Assembly of God, 3725 N. Sherman Blvd., from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 25. Food boxes and other products will be distributed.    

Bonus: Fireside reading circle of “Unlearn”: Saturday, Oct. 25

As part of the “See Me Because: Art Start Portrait Project Volume 8,” currently on display at Alice’s Garden, there will be a reading of the book, “Unlearn: 1010 Simple Truths for a Better Life” by Humble the Poet. The reading circle will take place at Alice’s Garden, 2136 N. 21st St., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25. Books will be provided, but attendees are advised to bring a chair, wear a mask and layer up.
