In collaboration with the Office of Violence Prevention, the Milwaukee Public Library is doing its part to help keep Milwaukee safe and engaged by offering activities throughout its branches even as the summer draws to an end.
Neil Albrecht, the community relations and engagement director for Milwaukee Public Library, said the library’s programs and events are created with the hope of promoting literacy and creating safe havens for Milwaukeeans of all ages.
Here are five things you should know:
1. The summer reading program
With a focus on improving literacy, the summer program offers reading guides and challenges for all ages.
2. Restorative Circles
The Milwaukee Public Library hosts youth circles to provide safe spaces for teens and tweens to develop skills like communication, team building, sensory processing and active listening.
3. Makerspaces
These are open daily at the Good Hope, Mitchell Street or Washington Park branches. They are places where people can gather and work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment and knowledge.
4. AmeriCorp opportunity
The Milwaukee Public Library also is an AmeriCorp program participant. Applications are currently open to apply for the program and potentially build your resumé by working in the library.
