How to Share Community News with Milwaukee NNS
Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service (NNS) welcomes stories from the community. This section is for local residents, grassroots organizers, neighborhood groups and community leaders to share what’s happening where they live and work.
You do not need to be a professional writer or journalist.
What Kind of Stories Can Be Submitted?
We are looking for local, community‑focused news, including:
- Neighborhood events and gatherings
- Programs or services benefiting residents
- Local organizations making a difference
- Volunteer opportunities
- Youth, arts and cultural activities
- Public meetings or forums
✅ The focus should be community benefit, not free advertising.
What Makes a Good Submission?
A strong submission:
- Is local (Milwaukee neighborhoods or nearby areas)
- Is timely (recent or upcoming events)
- Explains why it matters to residents
- Is written clearly and respectfully
- Shares real experiences or voices from the community
Writing Tips (Don’t Worry — Keep It Simple)
- Write like you talk — clear and honest
- Short paragraphs work best
- Avoid heavy jargon or technical language
- First‑person stories (“We organized…”, “I attended…”) are welcome
- Be factual and fair
You don’t need perfect grammar — editors may lightly edit for clarity.
Photos & Media Guidelines
Photos are optional but encouraged.
If you include photos:
- Make sure you have permission to share them
- Avoid images of children without parent/guardian consent
- Provide a photo credit
- Provide a caption that explains the photo and the people in the image
What Happens After You Submit?
- An editor reviews your submission
- They may contact you with questions or edits
- If accepted, your post will appear in Posts From Community
- Not all submissions are published, but all are appreciated
