Marchers file down S. Cesar E. Chavez Drive in Clarke Square during the 2010 immigrant rights event

A statewide march for immigrant and worker rights will be held Sunday, May 1, in Milwaukee. Voces de la Frontera, an immigrant rights group, is providing busing to and from the event from cities across Wisconsin including Madison, Racine and Whitewater. The march will culminate in a rally at Veteran’s Park where AFL-CIO national president Richard Trumka and Christine Neuman-Ortiz, director of Voces de la Frontera, will speak.

Raised in a South Side neighborhood where he still lives, Edgar Mendez is the managing editor of the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. In 2008, he won a Society of Professional Journalists’ regional award for columns dealing with issues such as poverty, homelessness and racism. His writing has been published by the Associated Press, Reuters, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other media. He has also co-authored three articles published in scholarly journals.
