The restored shelter dates from the 1920s. It was refurbished by the Friends of the Hank Aaron State Trail and Milwaukee Building and Construction Trades Council. Another restored shelter located in the Third Ward does not have solar-powered lighting.

The Menomonee Valley has long been the center of industry in Milwaukee. The area suffered from the decline in manufacturing in the 1970s, but has begun to attract investment in recent years.
