Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs will be attending the Reader’s Choice bookstore closing celebration and liquidation sale this weekend. The event will take place at Reader’s Choice at 1950 N. Martin Luther King Dr. on Saturday, July 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Reader’s Choice has been imbedded into the fabric of the community for more than a generation, and Ms. Allison’s commitment to literacy and promotion of African- American writers is unparalleled and will be sorely missed,” Alderwoman Coggs said.
The event will feature a conversation with local author Pastor Lovelace Redmond, who will be discussing his book “Demon’s Gone Crazy.” Local artist Fidel Verdin will also be attending and will be interviewing store owner Carla Allison on her journey.
Reader’s Choice bookstore is the last Black-owned bookstore in the state of Wisconsin and has served the Milwaukee community for more than 28 years. It has hosted book fairs, community dialogues, and many acclaimed authors. Owner Carla Allison is retiring and will be closing the store.
Reader’s Choice, located in the Historic King Drive BID, has a host of merchandise which includes contemporary books, classic literature, children’s books, calendars, greeting cards and Greek paraphernalia.
TRUE Skool, Inc. community service volunteers will be helping with the event.
