Shawn Mitchell, a Navy veteran, said it is important not to take citizenship for granted. To him, that means taking responsibility for himself and his family by learning to be more self-reliant and by sharing his knowledge and experience with other city residents.
Mitchell and his wife, an accountant, live on the Northwest Side. Their focus includes growing food in an urban garden, taking more control of their youngest son’s education and, for Shawn, learning and teaching others about diabetes management and developing entrepreneurial projects. Among them are consignment sales through Amazon and distribution of wholesale products.
Mitchell plans to write about their progress on a website called the Urban Citizen Project, which he is still developing.
