Author and social justice advocate Deanna Singh recently discussed her two children’s books, “I am a boy of color” and “I am a girl of color,” at Milwaukee Center for Independence, 2020 W. Wells St.
Singh was invited to present to MCFI’s Children’s Center program about the books, which speak to developing healthy self-images.
Singh said she wrote the books after she learned through her own research that fewer than 22 percent of published books depict children of color. “There are more books on inanimate objects.”
Additionally, she said, many in the education system unfortunately talk about “children as problems to be solved.”
Following her presentation, children were encouraged to ask questions and create self-portraits.
