With the holiday season around the corner, there are lots of opportunities to lend a hand. Volunteer Milwaukee, a service of the Nonprofit Center of Milwaukee features a calendar of events for volunteers, both one-time and ongoing. Here are a few of the opportunities in November and beyond.

Ready to Be a Hero? Disaster Action Team

The American Red Cross of SE WI is offering a one-day training Saturday, Nov. 3, on how to work with people in crisis on-scene at local disasters such as fires and floods in our community; 6-month commitment.

Help Milwaukee County Residents File Tax Refunds

Prepare basic tax returns for low-income residents or do related clerical duties weekdays, evenings or weekends Jan.-April. Social Development Commission is conducting training in November.

Ex Fabula Storytelling Event

Welcome guests, sell tickets, hand out programs, staff information and membership table and assist guests in storytelling for Ex Fabula. Sign up for orientation here.

Children/Teens Group Assistant

Provide care and support for children in group programs at Milwaukee Center For Children And Youth, an agency that provides services to children and youth who have been abused and/or neglected.

Receptionist/Office Assistant

Answer telephones, screen calls and schedule appointments Tuesdays or Wednesdays at Holton Street Clinic; must have computer experience.

Holiday Folk Fair International Event

Greet guests, sell food, monitor exhibits or assist at the walk Nov. 16-18 at the Holiday Folk Fair run by International Institute of Wisconsin. Sign up here.

Drumstick Dash 5K Run/Walk

Hand out water, snacks and packets and guide walkers/runners at Miller Park Thursday, Nov. 22, 6:30 a.m.-10 a.m., an event benefiting Feeding America Eastern WI. Register here to volunteer.

Ring Bells

Encourage giving with The Salvation Army Milwaukee County donation kettles November through Dec. 24; two-hour shifts at various locations. Register here.

Holiday Food Box Program

Your family, business, church or school can collect food for the boxes sent to central city families in need served by Capuchin Community Services for the Nov./Dec. holiday season. Learn more and sign up here.

Winter Coat Needed for Women and Children

Prepare women and children served by Meta House for winter by donating new and gently used winter coats/jackets of all sizes from newborn to adult.
