Rhonda Hill loves to travel, and whenever she goes on a trip, she likes to visit somewhere she can taste loose leaf teas. After checking out a tea spot in Arizona where women wore fancy hats they picked from a trunk in the back of the shop, she decided she wanted to create a similar fun experience for women in Milwaukee, but with a vibe that felt more comfortable to her.
In October, she started organizing Not Your Mama’s Tea, a monthly tea-tasting social for women to talk about an encouraging topic such as gratitude or hope, with a throwback hip hop and R&B playlist pulsing in the background. Women were invited to Sweet Black Coffee in Lindsay Heights this month to discuss the theme of joy: what it means, where to find it and how to choose it in daily life.
Hill said she hopes the tea tastings are uplifting and offer an opportunity for women at different stages in their lives to find support from each other. Not Your Mama’s Tea meets every second Sunday of the month from 2-4 p.m.
