Five seats on the Milwaukee Public school board are in play in the upcoming spring election. With that in mind, Leaders Igniting Transformation, also known as LIT, threw a civic engagement party March 14 to encourage voters of all ages – but especially youth – to make it to the polls.
Young people in the LIT program are looking to MPS for policy changes that would reduce suspensions and expulsions and to lower the police profile in the public schools. “If you want change – vote” was the message at “Ballot Bash.”
The LIT Youth Power Agenda:
- Create an inclusive school code
- Increase the number of licensed support professionals, including therapists, social workers, psychologists and guidance counselors
- Implement robust restorative justice practices citywide
- Reduce classroom size
- Provide culturally responsive education and training
- Collect and publish accurate data regarding all forms of discipline
- Provide universal, free, high-quality early childhood education
- Create a universal youth jobs program
