West African Art + Culture at CWA

It’s a special week at Capitol West Academy as we prepare to host the group Ranky Tanky on Friday morning with shows at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. for staff and students. Ranky Tanky is a Charleston-based quintet that performs timeless music of Gullah culture.

Artist in Residency

Also this week, a number of students are participating in an art project with Fancis Affotey who will help students conceptualize, design and paint a series of canvasses inspired by themes from the Gullah musical group Ranky Tanky. Themes include the preserving culture through music and art and overcoming extreme obstacles. Students will present their canvases as a single mural Friday during the Ranky Tanky program.

Ranky Tanky is in the area this week for a full performance at the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts. Tickets are available. CWA thanks the Wilson Center for making this week of art and culture possible for our students!
