Marquette University will host “Black Emotional Wellness: A conversation with radio and television personality and best-selling author Charlamagne Tha God and Chrishaunda Lee Perez,” presented by Marquette Student Government and Black Student Council, on Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Varsity Theatre, 1326 W. Wisconsin Ave.

The event will feature a candid conversation between Charlamagne and Perez about his book, the best-selling “Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me,” and the topic of black emotional health and trauma. Charlamagne has been a leading force progressing the mental health discussion in America and has spoken publicly about his struggles with anxiety and depression.

This event is free and open to the public.

Charlamagne drives the daily national conversation about issues related to hip-hop, race, society and politics. He is also the best-selling author of “Black Privilege: Opportunity Comes to Those Who Create It.”

A Milwaukee native, Perez is a writer, producer and orator who focuses on trauma. Her popular debut novel, “We Come as Girls, We Leave as Women,” about high school girls overcoming personal challenges as they head toward graduation, was released in fall 2018 and has been endorsed by Oprah Winfrey. She is also known for her work as co-writer and co-producer of the acclaimed science fiction/magical realism short film, “The Forever Tree,” and memoir of miracles, “Share the Dream: Building Noah’s Ark One Prayer at a Time.”

The event is additionally supported by the Marquette Forum, Near West Side Partners, Social Development Commission, Rent College Pads, and the Office of Community Engagement. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and V100 are the media co-sponsors.
