It is with a heavy heart that SDC’s Board of Commissioners and Chief Executive Officer announce the death of Commissioner George Matthews. Commissioner Matthews died Wednesday, April 21st from COVID-19 related complications.
Commissioner Matthews represented Milwaukee County residents living in SDC’s District 2. As a commissioner, Matthews was a liaison between SDC and the Sherman Park community where he lived. Matthews worked tirelessly on behalf of residents and SDC to address poverty in the community.
Matthews was a United States Army veteran and also worked in the Milwaukee Public School system. He was dedicated to the community and served with pride and passion. Commissioner Matthews was respected, trusted and understood the needs of the constituents he served.
Commissioner Matthews will be deeply missed.
Mr. Matthews work at Marvin Pratt Elementary School with me he was always looking out for his people in his community or wherever he went. He never withheld useful information to put people in better predicaments he always had a story to tell on how he helped someone or family in some way. He had a great sense of humor and presence. He will be greatly missed RIP.
