I support these protests, but I must admit the photo of the Shorewood protest (June 6: Shorewood) was disturbing.

Here’s the problem: Coronavirus is not just a health threat. It is an economic threat. If other places in our nation or in the world are able to stamp-out the epidemic and return to normal, while we continue to have flare-ups for several years into the future, then these other places will have a huge economic head-start. For example, what business will want to contend with the coronavirus when it can relocate or work out of a place where the epidemic has ended? How much additional money will we have to spend cleaning and sanitizing while our competitors move forward? How many of our students will have compromised educations?

These are things to consider, and it would be wise to protest in a manner that is not ultimately self-injuring.

Hi Steve! I totally understand your concerns. I assure you everyone at the Shorewood march was fairly distant and wearing masks. The image you see in most likely using a long lens which compressed the image so people appear closer than they really are. I hope that helps! I use long lenses all the time to achieve this effect so I know it can be deceiving. Good to keep that in mind for most protests and gatherings.
