”Milwaukee is a big city, and the neighborhoods and people we cover are full of vibrant and incredible stories,” says Matt Martinez, our health reporter. (Photo provided by Matt Martinez)

Name: Matt Martinez

What I do at NNS: I work on the health beat for NNS, which has a pretty wide range of topics to cover. As COVID-19 has shown us, health can affect every facet of our lives. My stories document how our community has been affected by the coronavirus. I also cover issues of health equity, nutrition and mental health, and any other topic that can be tied back to wellness.

How long I’ve worked here: Six months in December.

Why I love NNS: I believe in the mission of NNS above all things. Milwaukee is a big city, and the neighborhoods and people we cover are full of vibrant and incredible stories. What’s more than that, their residents deserve to have their voices heard. Their concerns, their beliefs, and everything in between, need a home. We provide that home.

What are you most proud of? The story I’m most proud of is my profile of Camille Mays, a local activist in Milwaukee who lost her son to gun violence. Her honesty and courage in telling her story made it one of the most powerful and affecting things I’ve written.

How to help
