It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

1. Golden Lotus Market grand opening: Friday, Jan. 22

Golden Lotus Asian Food Market, 8428 W. Silver Spring Drive, is celebrating its grand opening beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 22. The first 10 customers who purchase groceries will receive a 50 pound bag of rice. (Please note, the sign still says Sophia Asian Food Market.)

2. Milwaukee Area Labor Council blanket drive: Friday, Jan. 22

The Milwaukee Area Labor Council is hosting a blanket drive. Blankets can be bought online and sent to the Labor Council, 633 S. Hawley Rd., Suite 110, Milwaukee, WI 53214. Council members will also be collecting blankets at the office, 633 S. Hawley Rd., Suite 110, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22. Monetary donations are also accepted and can be made out to the Labor Community @ Work.

3. Blood drive at Sherman Phoenix: Saturday, Jan. 23

Evelyn’s Circle, Sherman Phoenix and Jammin’ 98.3 are hosting a blood drive at the Sherman Phoenix, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 23. The drive is a part of Versiti’s Sickle Cell-abration, an event designed to honor sickle cell patients. To schedule your donation, click here or call 877-232-4376.

4. “Identifying Features” screening at Avalon Theater: Friday, Jan. 22 through Sunday, Jan. 24

“Identifying Features” follows Magdalena as she travels through Mexico in search of her son who recently entered the United States. Along the way, she encounters Miguel, who was recently deported. The movie is in Spanish with English subtitles. The film will be screened at the Avalon Atmospheric Theater, 2473 S. Kinnickinnic Ave., starting Friday, Jan. 22 through Sunday, Jan. 24. 5. Cozy winter sale at Royally Vegan: Sunday, Jan. 24

Royally Vegan, 2923 N. 57th St., is having a cozy winter sale from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 24. The menu includes a grilled cheese sandwich, veggie chili, chili supreme and chili cheese fries. Orders must be placed by Saturday, Jan. 23. Curbside pickup and delivery are available.
