It’s Monday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please email info@milwaukeenns.org and put “5 things” in the subject line by noon Thursday.

1. Get a free smoke detector: Ongoing

If you need a smoke alarm, call the Smoke Alarm Hotline at (414) 286-8980. Arrangements will be made for Milwaukee firefighters to come to your single-family home or duplex to deliver a smoke alarm for free. They also will install the alarm if the residence is COVID-safe. In case you missed it: How to avoid fires and stay safe this winter

2. Collaborative City Art Project: until Jan. 31

Let your inner architect shine as you draw your ideal city block, which will then be combined with other submitted blueprints for this Milwaukee Public Library project. Submissions are due Jan. 31. More information here.

3. Virtual job fair: Wednesday, Jan. 19

A free online job fair runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19. Register here. In case you missed it: Looking for a job? Here are 5 places that can help you.

4. Sixth Aldermanic District Town Hall: Thursday, Jan. 20

Ald. Milele Coggs is looking for residents of her district, which includes parts of Harambee, Hillside, Brewers Hill and Borchert Field. The virtual town hall takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 20.

5. Danceworks School Day Off Workshop: Monday, Jan. 17

Danceworks is hosting a workshop for children in 5K through fifth grade on days off from school. The theme is around the world, and the workshop features music, dance and traditions from a different country. The class will take place at the studios, 1661 N. Water St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 17. Click here to sign up.
