5 things to know and do this week in Milwaukee: May 22 to May 26

It’s Monday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please submit your news by clicking here at least two weeks in advance.

1. Temporary MLK Library branch opens: Monday, May 22

Construction on the new Martin Luther King Library branch began on Friday and is scheduled to be completed in late 2024. A temporary branch opens on Monday, May 22 at 2767 N. Martin Luther King Drive. More information here.

2. Information on applying for community grants: Monday, May 22

The Greater Milwaukee Foundation has opened grant applications for several projects, including ThriveOn Collaboration in and around the Harambee neighborhood, projects targeting the Sherman Park neighborhood and projects in line with the 414Life Blueprint for Peace. Applications close on June 5, but you can learn more about the grants at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 22 at Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s office at 101 W. Pleasant Ave, Suite 210. 3. Amani “Bloom and Groom” plant sale: Tuesday, May 23

“Bloom and Groom” is an annual plant sale happening across the city, typically facilitated by neighborhood organizations. Dominican Center is hosting its sale from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23 at its office, located at 2470 W. Locust St. More information here. 



4. “Spill the tea”: Teens tell personal stories: Wednesday, May 24

Ex Fabula, a nonprofit, has trained teens in the craft of storytelling throughout May. Teens will share personal stories related to the theme “spill the tea” at this event from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at Newline Cafe, located at 3618 W. Pierce St. The event is free but space is limited. More information and RSVP here.

5. Job training for building automated systems: Wednesday, May 24

Employ Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical College, or MATC, are hosting a workshop with information about careers in building controls and facilities maintenance. The workshop takes place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at Employ Milwaukee, located at 2342 N. 27th St. More information and RSVP link here.

BONUS: Advancing health literacy listening session: Monday, May 22

The city and county governments are looking for community input on how to reach Milwaukee residents of color with health care toolkits and information. Those who attend this session and one on June 12 will be rewarded with a $200 gift card. This week’s session takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative, located at 4828 W. Fond Du Lac Ave. More information here.
