Inside the NNS Newsroom: Celebrate with us during NNSpirit Week (and donate!)

August 7, 2023 by Ron Smith Leave a Comment

Welcome to NNSpirit Week!

Ron Smith, executive director of the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service

Although we normally report about you, we are using this week to talk about NNS, our mission and to encourage you to donate so what we can continue to provide free, reliable and professional reporting to you and your neighbors.

In 2011, NNS Founding Editor Sharon McGowan and a team of four part-time reporters started on an epic journey: to give Milwaukee residents of color the newsroom they deserve through professional reporting.

A lot has changed since then, including a crisis in local journalism that leaves us with fewer reporters during a time when nonpartisan information is needed more than ever.

But one thing remains the same: NNS is still here, now with a full-time staff of seven and two part-timers. And we plan to grow our newsroom even larger to meet the needs of our neighbors.

We provide news –free of charge—to those who need it most. We publish to inform and to transform. And all our donations go to support our newsroom staffing and operations.

As a nonprofit newsroom, our work will always be free to read. But our labor is not.

So help us celebrate our 12th anniversary by donating. No gift is too small. No donation is too big.

Help us reach our goal of raising $12,000 in honor of our 12th anniversary!
