The pay-what-you-can produce market, Greater Good(s) MKE, is reopening Saturday at a new location on the Northwest Side.

The market had been located at Cloud 9 Workshop, 5205 W. North Ave. It lost its original location because Cloud 9, an eco-art studio, expanded and required additional space.

Starting this weekend, the market will open from 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays through Nov. 11 at 5531 W. North Ave.

Gina Nygro, the founder of Greater Goods MKE, opened the market in 2021 to serve residents in the Uptown Crossing Business District, which runs from West North Avenue from North Sherman Boulevard to North 60th Street and along West Lisbon Avenue from North 46th to North 51st streets.

Nygro said there is no produce market nearby.

Neighborhood residents can choose the produce they need and pay whatever they can afford.

It is modeled after Tricklebee Café, a pay-what-you-can community café that offers healthy meals and food-service training.

Nygro said the pay-what-you-can system balances itself out. Some residents pay more than what the produce is worth and others pay less.

Nygro said she plans to run the market until the end of fall. Organizers will spend the winter planning where the market will be in the spring.
