Greetings Milwaukee!
My name is Hannah Freireich. Please allow me to introduce myself as a new reporting intern, joining the staff of Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service.
I will be covering youth and youth organizations throughout Milwaukee.
I’m excited to work with the community and to help amplify the voices and stories of young people. As a new Milwaukee resident, I’m ecstatic to learn more about our neighborhoods and what makes Milwaukee unique.
Transition to the 414
Hailing from a suburb of Chicago, I am attending Marquette University, majoring in journalism with a minor in criminology.
The opportunities that the city of Milwaukee brings for thriving journalists like myself is what brought me to move to this amazing city from Chicago. (Don’t be fooled though, I will always be a Chicago sports fan!)
I’ve always been interested in advocating for and helping others while staying up to date on what’s happening in my community.
Discovering my future
My interest in journalism started when I watched sports with my grandfather and noticed that there weren’t many female sports broadcasters on the screen. I wanted to change that.
I joined my high school newspaper. There, I was the sports editor for two years. I followed my interest in sports journalism at college and worked for Marquette Wire as a sports reporter.
I soon realized that sports weren’t necessarily for me and found my fit with investigative journalism, social justice reporting and photography after taking courses at Marquette.
I look forward to using my skills from the classroom out in the community that I now call home.
A voice for our future generations
As I will be reporting on the youths of Milwaukee, it is important to me that these kids have a voice. I am thrilled to share their stories and their achievements with the public.
What I cherish about Milwaukee is the endless number of organizations readily accessible to the youth. It is my honor to shed light on these amazing organizations and share their mission and successes, and what they have to offer.
Throughout my childhood, I had access to summer camps in my community, so I understand the importance of kids in Milwaukee having exposure to similar resources.
The kids in our community are the future generation and deserve to have their voices heard.
I want our readers and the community to know I am beyond privileged to be working with NNS, a place where Milwaukee’s citizens are heard, even the little ones.
I’m excited to get to know our neighborhoods, find unique spots, and most importantly, meet some amazing people.
