You know her as Princess.

But in the NNS newsroom, she’s our queen.

For four years, PrincessSafiya Byers has covered housing and basic needs for the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service.

She was our first full-time reporter as part of the highly competitive Report For America program, which places journalists in newsrooms like ours to focus on under-covered issues.

A Milwaukee native, Princess embodies our mission of giving our city the newsroom it deserves through rigorous, community-centric reporting.

Her work has not gone unnoticed. Byers recently won the Loeb Award, which is considered the Pulitzer for business journalism, for her collaboration with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on “Milwaukee’s Hidden Landlords.”

I am blessed to lead a great team, and as the clock ticks on our year-end campaign, I am asking you to make a gift so we can keep them. Although our work is free, our labors are not. The donations you make help us pay for reporters like Princess.

We only have five days left in our year-end campaign.

Help us continue to fill information gaps in the city we love while celebrating the ordinary people who do extraordinary things.
