The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) continues to carry the torch for education with the 41st annual UNCF Milwaukee Walk/Run for Education. The event is August 2, 2025, and begins at 9 a.m. at Veteran’s Park on Milwaukee’s lakefront, 1010 N. Lincoln Memorial Drive. The theme for the walk is “Light the Way.”

Mandela Barnes is the 2025 Grand Champion for the walk. Barnes was Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor of Wisconsin from 2019-2023 and former state legislator. Barnes is the founder of The Long Run political action committee. He is also a graduate of Alabama A&M University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) and a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, one of the Divine Nine Black Greek letter organizations.

“UNCF plays a critical role in securing educational opportunities for our young people,” said Mandela Barnes. “I’m honored and proud to work with UNCF to raise awareness and scholarship dollars supporting this generation of young people. Working together, we can all light the way to education.”

“Sponsorships from local companies, team and individual registrations, and donations from the public in support of the UNCF Walk for Education all help raise scholarship dollars for local students,” said Lisa Rollins, Regional Development Director for UNCF. “It provides critical dollars that help local students achieve their college dreams and strengthen communities.”

Funding from the UNCF Milwaukee Walk/Run has provided 53 students with 64 scholarships averaging $3,405.

Individuals and teams can register now at the new UNCF Milwaukee Walk/Run website.

Additional information for team captains is available on the site, along individual registration forms. Local corporations and companies interested in sponsoring the 41st Annual UNCF Milwaukee Walk/Run should contact Latina Brooks, UNCF Development Associate at 312-813-3862 or Latina.Brooks@uncf.org.
