Hey everyone! My name is Jake Dale, and I am thrilled to be joining NNS as an intern this summer.
Here’s a little bit about me.
I am a junior at Marquette University studying journalism and digital media.
I was born and raised in San Francisco, California. After starting college, Milwaukee quickly became a second home. The city of Milwaukee is a massive reason why I picked Marquette in the first place.
Its vibrance and heart remind me of home. I love that I can continue to find new things within this city even after being here now for three years.
My journalism journey
I spent the last two years as a student working for the Marquette Wire, the school’s student media organization. There, I’ve worked as a sports producer and reporter for Marquette University Television.
Starting in the fall, I’ll be serving as the general manager of Marquette University Television. Being able to use my journalism and digital media skills in a creative environment is something I’m looking forward to continuing in this next career step.
Telling stories
I love art museums, vintage movie theaters and anything sports-related, including playing pickup basketball.
In fact, my infatuation with sports was the reason I got into journalism in the first place. At first, it was just a way to be closer to it all, sitting in press conferences and on the sidelines. Yet, as I did more writing and storytelling through the medium of sports, I found the most rewarding parts of the job were illuminating the lesser-seen moments.
Telling the stories of not just the accomplishments of coaches, players and fans but for who they are as people was the most gratifying part of my work. Even today, the favorite sports stories I read are the ones that highlight the innate humanity of it all.
As a journalist, I strive to keep the people and their whole stories top of mind.In my free time I enjoy writing articles and honing my writing craft on my personal blog, The J. It’s there that I’ve been able to grow my journalistic muscles in a way I hope others view as creatively endearing.
My goals at NNS
Now I get the opportunity to cover arts and culture and faith for NNS. Being a journalist in a city like Milwaukee and covering Black and Brown communities is a fantastic chance and one that I won’t take lightly.
Having this role to tell the stories of the beautiful minds that shape this city is a task I can’t wait to dive into.
The shifting world of journalism
Like many things, modern journalism is changing. The shifting landscape of news may feel daunting and unforgiving, but it doesn’t have to be. Telling the stories of the people that impact this city is more important than ever, and I’m excited to do exactly that.
As for the future, I am eager to hear from you! For faith, arts and culture, I want to be a messenger that showcases incredible stories in our community. If you have a story or anecdote, or just want to say hello, shoot me an email at jdale@milwaukeenns.org.
