The Urban Ecology Center (UEC) recently showcased their brand new 15-passenger bus delivering students to their Washington Park location. The bus was funded through a $100,000 impact grant from the Generac Foundation, and will be used to help local students access nature-based, hands-on science education. The “S” in STEM.
Transportation is a major barrier that prevents students from engaging in off-site programming. This new bus will be added to UEC’s fleet, and will transport students to the Center’s newly-renovated Washington Park building. Due to the growth in programming in the Washington Park neighborhood after the renovation, extra transportation resources were required to help students access new learning opportunities.
Students from Woodlands school arrived on the bus. The Urban Ecology Center’s three locations provides year-round educational programs for kids, families and adults of all ages. The cornerstone program is the Neighborhood Environmental Education Program (NEEP) serving kids in 60 urban Milwaukee schools each year. This program enables students to take a walk in the woods, stand in a river in hip waders, or run along the beach at Lake Michigan when they might not have other opportunities to do so.
