The Multicultural Entrepreneurial Institute has trained hundreds of prospective business owners since it was founded in 2006. After completing the training program, 10 entrepreneurs recently competed for $3,000 grants to start or expand their businesses.

Elvis tribute band heats up the Domes
“Music Under Glass,” the weekly November through March live concert at the Mitchell Park Domes, recently featured music of “The King” as well as an Elvis costume contest and a light show.

State budget cuts lengthen commute times for south siders
Statewide cuts to public transportation and other budget concerns have led to the elimination of Route 18, which serves the Clarke Square and Layton Boulevard West neighborhoods. Reductions in bus service across the city will begin Jan. 29.

Clarke Square neighborhood organizer wins award
Manni Marquez, director of the Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative (CSNI), was recently selected as the 2011 “Mi Comunidad” award winner. The award recognizes an unsung hero in Milwaukee’s Hispanic community each year. Marquez has been active in the Clarke Square neighborhood for more than 15 years.

Block watch captains honored in Clarke Square
Milwaukee Police Department District 2, which includes Clarke Square, recently recognized block watch captains and members at a Block Watch Captains Award Dinner. District 2 has 214 block watches, more than any other district in the city.

Clarke Square neighborhood takes census into its own hands
Only about half of Clarke Square residents filled out their 2010 census forms, information that the federal government uses for multiple purposes including allocating funds to communities. As a result, the Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative is taking its own census.

New UW med school program inspires grads to pursue urban medicine
A new training program in urban medicine offered by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health sent a medical student to the Bread of Healing Clinic in Lindsay Heights and another to the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center in Clarke Square last year. Now the two students have chosen to complete their three-year residencies in Milwaukee’s central city neighborhoods.

Lofts and indoor farmers market to replace longtime outdoor market
With the completion date set for June 2012, ground was broken for the Mitchell Street Market Lofts on Oct. 6. The complex, to be built on the corner of W. Mitchell St. and S. Muskego Ave., will feature two-bedroom apartments and a year-round farmers market, which will replace the current market.

Firefighters stumped by severed tree branch
A recent storm split a tree on the 1800 block of W. Washington St. in Clarke Square, and caused extensive damage in the city as high winds blew through the area.
