Recycled art exhibition promotes reuse for Earth Day

April 24, 2018 by Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity Leave a Comment

Mark Winter and his “Ball-o-Junk” (Entry 80)

Just in time for Earth Day (4/22), Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity ReStore is showcasing an exhibition of 116 recycled and repurposed works in their 9th annual Recycled Art Contest. This one-of-a-kind gallery has been labeled one of Milwaukee’s “greenest” art exhibitions, as all of the artists had to use second hand materials purchased at Habitat ReStores as the primary materials for their works. The innovative entries (including Mark Winter’s 150 pound sphere of welded tools, toys, and home goods – Entry 80 – picture attached) are on display at ReStore East (420 S. 1st, Milwaukee) and will be featured in the Historic Third Ward’s Gallery Night & Day on April 20th and 21st. The public can vote for their favorite in store and online, with the top five vote-getters receiving ReStore shopping sprees.

In 2017 alone, Milwaukee’s three ReStores prevented more than 6 million pounds of reusable materials from ending up in local landfills by reselling donated furniture, appliances, cabinetry and home goods. More than $2 million worth of product was sold last year, with all proceeds benefiting Habitat’s work to serve families in need of safe, affordable housing.
