The Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service is collaborating with Historic Milwaukee on “Neighborhood Gems: Behind the Scenes,” which takes place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1.
The free digital event, part of the virtual Doors Open, which runs through Oct. 11, will feature five-minute “lightning round” presentations from eight community projects, using multimedia and storytelling to share their backstory.
In the lead up, we are publishing mini-features on the projects. Today, we feature Visual Vibes on Villard and Artist Working in Education’s Silver City Artist-in-Residency with Sara Gail Luther.
Visual Vibes on Villard
Visual Vibes on Villard is a public art project taking place throughout the Villard Avenue Business Improvement District, located in the corridor surrounding North 35th Street and West Villard Avenue. Five artists were selected by neighbors and commissioned to create murals on buildings connecting to themes of entrepreneurship, cultural pride, community pride, health and wellness and environmental conversation.
The Visual Vibes on Villard presentation will be given by Angelique Sharpe, manager of Villard Avenue BID #19.
Artists Working in Education’s Silver City Artist-in-Residency with Sarah Gail Luther
Artists Working in Education has established an artist-in-residence program in Silver City, with neighborhood resident and artist Sarah Gail Luther leading the way. The program invites community members to “creatively engage with their neighborhood, neighbors and share culture.” Creative projects and activities can be found on the project’s website.
This program is modeled after Artist Working in Education’s artist-in-residence at the Mitchell Street Branch of the Milwaukee Public Library.
The Silver City Artist-in-Residency presentation will be given by Luther.
