Name: Ron “Ronshine” Smith
What I do at NNS: Adam Carr would likely say I send out memes and annoy the staff. And he’s not wrong. As editor and project director, I work with the NNS staff and volunteers to produce high-quality journalism. I am always juggling other duties, including teaching at Marquette University and finding ways to engage with readers and funders.
How long I’ve worked here: I started in January 2019.
Why I love NNS: I’ve worked in many newsrooms, but no other organization fits my mission as much as NNS does. We tell the stories of folks other media outlets often ignore. It’s an honor to be able to tell stories of resilience, instead of ones that focus on conflict and hopelessness. We do journalism that matters for people who matter.
What are you most proud of? I am so proud of how we’ve covered the coronavirus crisis. We’ve focused on providing readers with resources to help them navigate these chaotic times.
How to help
Make it your business to keep NNS in business by donating. Your money pays for the dedicated staff of reporters and editors who work hard to connect you to our communities.
