The Neighborhood Leadership Institute, which was developed to help build the capacity and effectiveness of resident and nonprofit leaders, celebrated the program’s completion Thursday. Eight pairs of participants in NLI’s second cohort came from the neighborhoods of Amani, Capitol Heights, Woodlands, Harambee, Layton Boulevard West, Lindsay Heights, Thurston Woods and Washington Park.

Neighbors, politicians, community organizations, and funders celebrated the power of collaboration and perseverance at the groundbreaking ceremony of Johnsons Park.
After several weeks, artist Ramiro Sandoval Argueta’s mural on the South Side is complete. Painted on the side of a barbershop at Mitchell Street and Chavez Drive, the work depicts hands growing from the ground holding an ear of corn, which Sandoval describes as “the universal seed.”
Flowering Tree, an organization that promotes Native American culture, held an event Saturday honoring veterans, active military members and others who serve the community at the All Nations Senior and Culture Center at 33rd and State Street.
Despite rainy weather, neighborhood residents turned out for the first farmers market in Jackson Park. Vendors sold early summer greens and vegetables, bakery-made bread, gifts and stationary and food truck goodies.
