Organizers seek to raise funds for free arts programming

Students swing for the fences in baseball essay contest
Fourth- through ninth-grade students are invited to enter an essay contest about how they used values demonstrated by Jackie Robinson, the first African American baseball player in the major leagues, to overcome personal barriers. Prizes include a trip to the World Series.

Forum Latino offers resources for parents of special needs students
For 10 years, MPS has held an annual “Foro” or “Forum Latino” for parents of students with special needs. More than 400 people attended this year’s event, the only one of its kind in the state, according to the school district.

Public library cuts hours despite increased attendance
The Milwaukee Public Library system has seen an increase of nearly 223,000 visitors compared to the same time last year. Still, the system had to cut its proposed budget for 2013, resulting in a reduction of hours and services.
