Youth encourage peers to “kick butts”
Mary Ryan Boys & Girls Club members joined anti-smoking groups on March 21 to urge their peers to quit smoking. They hung colorful T-shirts bearing anti-tobacco messages on clotheslines in front of the club at 43rd and Burleigh streets to attract the attention of rush hour commuters.

Teens speak out at Martin Luther King Day event
More than 200 city residents observed the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday by attending the Kujichagulia Luthern Center’s annual event, held this year at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Following two workshop sessions presented by area educators, teens from the youth organizations Urban Underground and Pathfinders discussed some of their challenges with adult attendees during a “Youth Speakout.”

New UW med school program inspires grads to pursue urban medicine
A new training program in urban medicine offered by the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health sent a medical student to the Bread of Healing Clinic in Lindsay Heights and another to the Sixteenth Street Community Health Center in Clarke Square last year. Now the two students have chosen to complete their three-year residencies in Milwaukee’s central city neighborhoods.

Mosaics piece together Native American culture at Brown Street Academy
Brown Street Academy principal Ava Morris wanted her students to have a variety of experiences that they might not otherwise have access to. The school lost its part-time art teacher in 2009, so when Morris heard about Arts@Large from a colleague, she jumped at the opportunity. The organization pairs diverse visual, literary, performing and multimedia artist educators with students for a three-year period.
