The annual Garfield Avenue Festival, held between 7th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Bronzeville drew large crowds despite an early-afternoon downpour. Food, music and homemade wares were plentiful at the day-long event.

Program cultivates new crop of neighborhood leaders
The Neighborhood Leadership Institute, which was developed to help build the capacity and effectiveness of resident and nonprofit leaders, celebrated the program’s completion Thursday. Eight pairs of participants in NLI’s second cohort came from the neighborhoods of Amani, Capitol Heights, Woodlands, Harambee, Layton Boulevard West, Lindsay Heights, Thurston Woods and Washington Park.

Gerald L. Ignace Indian Health Center held its “Planting Festival” At the Native Wellness Garden at 6th and Howard over the weekend. Volunteers planted the “3 Sisters Garden,” and the Medicine Wheel Garden, and prepared other areas for planting.
