The Running Rebels youth organization is taking entries for a logo contest until Jan. 31. Youths ages 10-19 are eligible to submit entries.

State budget cuts lengthen commute times for south siders
Statewide cuts to public transportation and other budget concerns have led to the elimination of Route 18, which serves the Clarke Square and Layton Boulevard West neighborhoods. Reductions in bus service across the city will begin Jan. 29.
Clarke Square neighborhood organizer wins award
Manni Marquez, director of the Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative (CSNI), was recently selected as the 2011 “Mi Comunidad” award winner. The award recognizes an unsung hero in Milwaukee’s Hispanic community each year. Marquez has been active in the Clarke Square neighborhood for more than 15 years.
BID 32 eyes banner year in 2012
If you feel welcome when you drive along Fond du Lac from 18th to 27th Street, it might be because of the banners hanging from the signposts. The banners read, “Welcome to Marketplace: Advancing Economic and Environmental Innovations.”
Washington Park Partners starts new year with new plan

Block watch captains honored in Clarke Square
Milwaukee Police Department District 2, which includes Clarke Square, recently recognized block watch captains and members at a Block Watch Captains Award Dinner. District 2 has 214 block watches, more than any other district in the city.
LBWN awarded grant for home renovation program
Layton Boulevard West Neighbors, Inc. (LBWN) recently received a $112,000 grant from Wells Fargo to continue home renovation efforts in the neighborhood. The money will be used for the Turnkey Renovation program, a project in which foreclosed homes are purchased, renovated and fitted with the latest in energy-saving technology.
Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service Holiday Photo Contest
NNS invites Milwaukee residents to submit photos that show how they celebrate the holidays. Submissions are due by Monday, Jan. 2. The 10 best photos will be posted at www.milwaukeenns.org on Monday, Jan. 9. First prize will be a $50 Visa gift card; two runners-up will each will receive a $25 Visa gift card.
